Milestone 12 of 13 Start a retail business - compliance essentials

Pay business rates and manage your waste

Your council bills business rates on your shop, and you are responsible for your waste until it reaches a registered carrier.

Business rates are based on your shop's rateable value, which the Valuation Office estimates. Your council sends the bill and decides whether you get relief, so tell the council's business rates team when you move in.

You have a duty of care for the waste your shop produces. Hand it only to a registered waste carrier, and complete a waste transfer note, or a document with the same information such as an invoice, for each load that leaves your premises.
