Milestone 2 of 13 Start a retail business - compliance essentials

Meet consumer rights on what you sell

Goods must be of satisfactory quality, fit for purpose and as described, and your terms cannot take those rights away.

Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, goods you sell must be of satisfactory quality, fit for any particular purpose the customer made known to you, and as described. A term in your returns policy or receipt that tries to exclude or restrict those rights does not bind the customer. You can offer more than the law requires, but not less.

Fair trading law also bans misleading and aggressive practices, such as false claims about a product or a price.

Consumer rights compliance for traders

Quality standards for goods, services and digital content, and the remedies customers can claim.

Avoid unfair trading practices

Misleading actions and omissions, aggressive practices and the banned practices.
