Guide
Vehicle Type Approval
Get type approval for vehicles manufactured or imported into GB.
You must get type approval before selling vehicles in Great Britain. The type of approval depends on how many vehicles you make or import. Check if your vehicles need Whole Vehicle Type Approval, National Small Series approval, or Individual Vehicle Approval. Report safety defects immediately.
- Get Whole Vehicle Type Approval for volume manufacturers
- Apply for National Small Series approval if making fewer than 75 vehicles per year
- Use Individual Vehicle Approval for kit cars or imports
- Check IVA inspection levels (Basic, Normal, Enhanced)
- Report safety defects within 24-48 hours
- বNotify DVSA of recalls"
- Penalty for failure to recall: unlimited fine
- Keep product liability insurance
- Check DVSA recall database at GOV.UK
- Verify UKCA marking for GB market
Vehicles placed on the GB market must have type approval confirming they meet safety and environmental standards. The type of approval required depends on whether you're a volume manufacturer, small series producer, or individual vehicle owner.
Post-Brexit changes
GB type approval is now separate from EU type approval. Vehicles need GB type approval for the Great Britain market, but EU type approval remains valid in Northern Ireland under the Windsor Framework.
Recalls and safety defects
Manufacturers and importers have ongoing safety obligations that extend beyond the initial sale. If a safety defect is discovered, you must report it and may need to conduct a recall.
Recall obligations extend beyond warranty periods. Manufacturers must notify registered keepers, provide free repairs, and track completion rates. Failure to recall when required is a serious criminal offence under the Consumer Protection Act.
