Management duties 2
Ensure conventionally reared meat chickens meet welfare standards
If your business is responsible for conventionally reared meat chickens you must make sure they obey the requirements set out in Part 2 of Schedule 5A. This adds to the existing duties you already have for other farmed animals such as poultry, cattle or pigs.
Meet welfare standards for conventionally reared meat chickens
If you keep meat chickens you must follow a set of extra welfare rules. This includes holding a recognised training certificate, staying within stocking‑density limits (or notifying the Secretary of State and meeting extra conditions for higher densities), keeping detailed house‑system records, maintaining suitable ventilation, lighting, litter and feeding, inspecting birds twice daily, cleaning after each flock and keeping records for at least three years.

Fail to comply with duty in Schedule 5A paragraph 14(2)
If your food business does not meet the duty set out in paragraph 14(2) of Schedule 5A – the additional condition that applies to conventionally reared meat chickens – you commit a criminal offence. Conviction can lead to a fine (potentially unlimited) and, depending on the sanction applied by the court, possible imprisonment.
