Sell food you make at home

Sell cakes, preserves or meals you make in your own kitchen. Register with your council before you start, run your kitchen to a food safety procedure, give customers allergen information, and check your mortgage, insurance and tax.

Food, Drink & Hospitality Starting Updated 1 November 2026
  1. Register with your council

Register your home as food premises at least 28 days before you start selling. It is free.

  2. Prepare your kitchen for inspection

A home kitchen does not need to be a commercial kitchen, but it must be clean, in good repair and run to a food safety procedure.

  3. Train yourself and anyone who helps

Everyone who handles the food needs supervision, instruction or training to match the work.

  4. Give allergen information for everything you sell

What you must give depends on whether you pack the food before or after the customer orders.

  5. Sell online and deliver

Customers who order remotely need allergen information before they buy and when the food arrives.

  6. Check your mortgage, planning and insurance

Council registration does not give you anyone else's permission.

  7. Tell HMRC about your sales

Register for Self Assessment once your takings go over the £1,000 trading allowance.
