A project is notifiable if construction work on site is scheduled to last longer than 30 working days with more than 20 workers working at the same time at any point, or to exceed 500 person days. The client must notify HSE in writing as soon as is practicable before the construction phase begins, and display the notice in the site office where workers can read it.

When HSE notification is required

Check whether your project passes the notification thresholds.

Test 1: Work scheduled to last longer than 30 working days and to have more than 20 workers working at the same time at any point
Test 2: Work scheduled to exceed 500 person days
Either test: Meeting either test makes the project notifiable
Who notifies: The client; for a domestic client, the contractor or principal contractor, or the principal designer by written agreement
When: As soon as practicable before the construction phase begins
How: In writing, through the HSE online F10 form; HSE no longer accepts paper, email or post
On site: The notice must be displayed in the site office where workers can read it
Changes: The notice must be updated if necessary

The Health and Safety Executive for most projects
The Office of Rail and Road for work it enforces on railways and other guided transport
The Office for Nuclear Regulation for GB nuclear sites, authorised defence sites and new nuclear build sites
