As an employer you can get a basic Disclosure and Barring Service check, which shows unspent convictions, for someone applying for a role. You can request a more detailed standard or enhanced check only for certain roles, for example in healthcare or childcare. If you carry out checks, you must have a policy on employing ex-offenders and show it to any applicant who asks. Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own checks.
