Packaging and labeling for export markets
Country-specific packaging and labeling requirements - UK standards don't automatically apply overseas.
Every export market has specific packaging and labeling rules that often differ significantly from UK requirements. UK labeling standards and certification marks cannot be relied upon to be compliant overseas.
Language requirements
Non-English speaking markets often legally require product information in the local language. Some countries' regulations specify exact terms that must be used when translating - using wrong terminology can lead to rejection at customs or regulatory penalties.
Even where not legally required, using customers' language provides broader appeal and demonstrates market commitment.
Symbols and certification marks
UK marks like the kitemark won't apply overseas. CE marking may not be recognized in many markets. You may need to obtain destination-specific certifications and display different symbols showing compliance with local standards.
Transport packaging requirements
Legally required information must appear on transport packaging, including:
- Shipper and consignee full details
- Port of entry and destination
- Package identification numbers and marks
- Handling instructions (fragile, this way up, etc.)
- Gross and net weights
- Package dimensions
- Perishable goods dates
- Hazard warnings (if applicable)
Product-specific labeling research
Find regulatory requirements on each country's regulatory body websites. Key areas to research:
- Nutrition and allergens: Food products have strict labeling rules
- Technical information: Electronics, machinery, appliances
- Safety warnings: Required wording and placement
- Materials and ingredients: Full disclosure requirements
- Environmental marks: Recycling symbols, waste disposal instructions
