Workshops across the division use hazardous substances — solders and fluxes, electroplating and pickling chemistry, casting fumes, lacquers, adhesives, resins and dusts. Employers must assess exposure, control it (often local exhaust ventilation with statutory thorough examination at least every 14 months), provide RPE and carry out health surveillance where needed. Consumer products placed on the market must be safe in normal and reasonably foreseeable use. The residual catch-all where no specific product rules apply — it governs jewellery, musical instruments, sports goods, brushes and miscellaneous goods. Where a specific regime exists (toys, medical devices, PPE) that regime takes precedence. Enforced by OPSS and local Trading Standards. In Northern Ireland the EU General Product Safety Regulation (EU) 2023/988 applies instead.
