Respirable crystalline silica (RCS) is the key health hazard across the division — released when cutting, grinding, crushing, mixing or finishing glass, ceramics, cement, concrete, stone and abrasives. Employers must assess and control exposure below the workplace exposure limit (0.1 mg/m3 8-hour TWA), provide LEV/dust suppression and respiratory protection, and arrange health surveillance for silicosis. Also covers other process substances (glazes, frits, refractory fibres, kiln gases). NI: Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2003.
