The responsible person must carry out and maintain a fire risk assessment for workplace buildings (offices, workshops, stores). Underground and process fire/explosion risk at a mine or quarry is regulated primarily through the mines/quarries safety regime, DSEAR and the explosives regime rather than the Fire Safety Order. Devolved variants: Fire (Scotland) Act 2005; Fire and Rescue Services (NI) Order 2006.

Genuinely division-wide: every coal/lignite operation generates respirable coal dust and respirable crystalline silica. Duties to assess and control exposure, monitor airborne dust against workplace exposure limits and provide health surveillance for dust-exposed workers. Mines Regs 2014 set a respirable-dust action level enforcing the same control objective underground.
