What MHCLG does

Government department responsible for housing and planning, building safety, communities and local growth, local government, homelessness, and democracy and elections. Sets building regulations policy, sponsors the Building Safety Regulator. From April 2025, also responsible for fire safety policy (transferred from Home Office following Grenfell Inquiry recommendations). Sponsors Homes England and HM Land Registry. Administers local government finance including business rates and council tax support.

Additional information

Renamed from DLUHC (Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities) in July 2024, reverting to its former name. Fire safety responsibility transferred from Home Office on 1 April 2025. Key legislation includes Building Safety Act 2022, Town and Country Planning Act 1990, Housing Acts, Building Regulations 2010, Leasehold and Freehold Reform Act 2024, Fire Safety Act 2021.
