What you must do
2 compliance obligations under this legislation.
Management duties 2
Comply with the free‑speech complaints scheme
If you run a registered university, college or a students’ union, you must have a process for handling free‑speech complaints and work with the Office for Students (OfS) under the new scheme. You cannot charge people a fee, must refer complaints within any time‑limit set, and must publish the scheme and inform the parties of any decisions or recommendations.
Maintain compliant governance and report student unions to the OfS
If you run a higher‑education institution you must make sure your governing documents and management arrangements meet the Office for Students’ registration conditions, and you must keep the OfS informed about any student‑union bodies at your college, especially if you receive public funding. In practice this means reviewing your board’s duties, putting effective governance processes in place, and providing the OfS with a up‑to‑date list of recognised student unions.
