This journey covers what you must do as an employer after a workplace accident. Follow the steps in order: first aid, secure the scene, report, investigate, record, notify your insurer.

Provide first aid and secure the scene
Your first duty is to the injured person and to preventing further harm. Use your trained first aiders and ensure the area is safe before anyone approaches. Cordon off the accident scene to prevent others entering and to preserve evidence for investigation.

Determine if RIDDOR reporting is required
Certain accidents must be reported to the Health and Safety Executive under the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 2013 (RIDDOR). Failure to report when required is a criminal offence.

Investigate and record
Even minor accidents should be investigated to prevent recurrence. Record the incident in your accident book and gather witness statements while memories are fresh. Look beyond the immediate cause to understand root causes: was the risk assessment adequate? Was training sufficient? Were safe systems of work being followed?

Notify your insurer
Contact your employers' liability insurer promptly. Most policies require notification within a specified period, and failure to notify may affect your cover. Have the details of the accident, any RIDDOR report reference, and your investigation findings ready.

Update your risk assessment based on investigation findings. Implement corrective actions before work resumes in the affected area. Communicate lessons learned to all employees through toolbox talks or safety briefings.
