The type of licence you need depends on your business:

  • Premises licence: For pubs, bars, restaurants, hotels, off-licences, and shops selling alcohol
  • Club premises certificate: For genuine members' clubs (social clubs, sports clubs) — no DPS needed
  • Temporary Event Notice (TEN): For one-off events with fewer than 500 people
  • Late night refreshment: If serving hot food or drink between 11pm and 5am (often included in a premises licence)

Most businesses will need a premises licence. If you are a qualifying club, a club premises certificate may be more appropriate.
