Environmental Permits for Manufacturing
Understand when you need an environmental permit and how to apply for one.
Check if your manufacturing activities need an environmental permit. Apply for the correct permit type and follow its conditions. Failing to get a permit or breaching its conditions can lead to fines or imprisonment.

- Apply for standard rules (8-10 weeks) or bespoke permits (4-6 months)
- Pay pre-application advice fees: £100/hour standard, £353/hour radioactive technical
- Display permit on-site and include number on waste documents
- Penalties: Up to 5 years imprisonment and unlimited fines for no permit
- 50% discount on fixed penalties if paid within 28 days (£300 business, £100 individual)
- Annual charges vary by activity: £766-£4,736 per year
- Use credit/debit card, electronic transfer, cheque, GOV.UK Pay, or direct debit
- Request pre-application advice for complex cases (£100-£1,000 fee)

Manufacturing activities that release emissions to air, water, or land may require an environmental permit from the Environment Agency (England) or equivalent regulators in devolved nations.
