The Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) is the industry standard for proving construction skills competence in the UK. While not legally mandatory, most construction sites require all workers to hold a valid CSCS card for site access.

Why you need a CSCS card

  • Most principal contractors require CSCS cards for site access
  • Demonstrates you have appropriate training and qualifications
  • Helps principal contractors meet CDM 2015 competence duties
  • Shows you've passed the CITB Health & Safety test

Legal status: CSCS is an industry card scheme, not a statutory requirement. The legislation listed for this guide (CDM 2015 and the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974) underpins the general duty to use competent workers - it does not make CSCS cards themselves a legal requirement.

Industry Accreditation cards have ended: CSCS stopped renewing Industry Accreditation (grandfather rights) cards from 30 June 2024, and all Industry Accreditation cards expired on 31 December 2024. Since 1 January 2025, obtaining a CSCS card requires a recognised qualification (such as an NVQ), professional-body membership or an approved academic route.

Other construction competency cards

In addition to CSCS, several other card schemes prove competence in specific construction roles and activities:
