Driver CPC Requirements
Understand Driver Certificate of Professional Competence requirements for HGV and bus drivers.
Professional drivers of large goods vehicles (over 3.5 tonnes) or buses (carrying 9+ passengers) must complete 35 hours of training every 5 years and carry a Driver CPC card. You could be fined £1,000 if you drive without one.
- Complete 35 hours of training every 5 years
- Carry your Driver CPC card when driving professionally
- Training must be from a JAUPT-approved provider
- Up to 12 hours can be done online
- Each training session must last at least 7 hours
- Fine for driving without a valid card: £1,000
- Employers can also be fined £1,000
- Exemptions include vehicles under 3.5 tonnes and non-commercial use
- Training costs £30-£60 per hour
- DVSA conducts roadside checks for compliance
Professional drivers of goods vehicles over 3.5 tonnes must hold a Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (Driver CPC) in addition to their driving licence. Driving professionally without a valid DQC carries a £1,000 fine.
