CLP Chemical Classification and Labelling
Classify, label and package hazardous chemicals under GB CLP.
You must classify, label, and package hazardous chemicals correctly before selling them in Great Britain. Use the CLP system with GHS pictograms and include all required information on labels. Keep records for at least 10 years.
- Classify hazards using CLP criteria for all chemicals you sell
- Use GHS pictograms on labels (9 standard types)
- Include supplier ID, hazard statements, and precautionary statements on labels
- Provide a 16-section safety data sheet for industrial or professional use
- Notify poison centre before selling hazardous mixtures
- Keep classification records for 10 years
- Labels must be in English for GB market
- Reduced labelling allowed for packages under 125ml
- Penalty for non-compliance: unlimited fine or prison
All hazardous substances and mixtures placed on the GB market must be classified, labelled, and packaged in accordance with GB CLP regulations. The system uses the Globally Harmonised System (GHS) for consistent hazard communication.
Classification process
- Gather data on substance properties (toxicity, flammability, environmental hazards)
- Apply CLP classification criteria to determine hazard classes
- Select appropriate GHS pictograms and hazard statements
- Create compliant labels with all required elements
Safety Data Sheets
For substances and mixtures supplied for professional or industrial use, you must provide a 16-section Safety Data Sheet. The SDS must be updated when new hazard information becomes available or classification changes.
